Altun Ha, meaning 'Rockstone Water', was a Classic Period ceremonial centre with trading links between the Caribbean and the interior. The Temple of the Masonry Altars at about 16 metres is its largest temple, and the site's jade head of the sun god, found in 1968, is one of Belize's most famous artifacts.
The jade came from ancient mines along Guatemala's Motagua River, which shows how far Maya trade networks reached. It weighs about 4.4 kilograms and appears on Belizean banknotes.
