Altun Ha, the Maya site on this half-day, takes its name from the Yucatec Maya for 'Rockstone Water'. It was a ceremonial and trading centre near the Caribbean coast, linking the coast and interior in the Classic Period. The Temple of the Masonry Altars (structure B-4), at about 16 metres, is the largest temple at the site.
Altun Ha is best known for a find made in 1968: a jade head of the Sun God Kinich Ahau, uncovered in a tomb in the Temple of the Masonry Altars by Belizean workers alongside Dr. David Pendergast of the Royal Ontario Museum. At about 4.4 kilograms it is reported as the largest carved jade object found in the Maya world, and it appears on Belizean banknotes. The original is kept in a secure location rather than at the site.
