About This Tour

A private guide takes you from the Altun Ha Maya ruins to the Community Baboon Sanctuary, a community-run reserve where black howler monkeys live wild in the tree canopy. Combines Belize's ancient history with its wildlife in one private outing — Altun Ha's temples, then a guided walk through the jungle habitat of the black howler monkey, locally called a 'baboon' despite not being one.

The Community Baboon Sanctuary was founded in 1985 through a partnership between primatologist Robert Horwich and Bermudian Landing landowner Fallet Young, starting with twelve landowners. It now involves more than 200 participants across seven villages, and the black howler monkey, locally called a 'baboon', rose from about 800 animals in 1985 to roughly 3,500 in 2017, according to sanctuary figures.

Howler monkeys earn their name from loud, far-carrying calls that you often hear before you see the animals. The sanctuary protects forest on private land, so jaguar, ocelot and over 200 bird species have also benefited.

Altun Ha completes the day: a Classic Maya trading and ceremonial centre whose jade head of the sun god, found in 1968, is a national icon.
