About This Tour
Climb the ancient temples of Altun Ha, then float on an inner tube through the Nohoch Che'en cave system's underground river, all in one private day trip from Belize City. A private, two-activity day pairing Belize's Maya history with its cave country — your guide and driver take you between both stops on your own private schedule.
The Nohoch Che'en Caves Branch Archaeological Reserve, where the tubing happens, is a network of limestone caves about 30 minutes from Belmopan and the most visited archaeological reserve in Belize. The Maya treated caves as entrances to Xibalba, the underworld, and used them for ritual, so floating past stalactites and old pottery fragments is also a glimpse of that belief system.
Altun Ha, the morning stop, is the Classic Period site famous for the jade head of the Sun God Kinich Ahau, found in 1968 in the Temple of the Masonry Altars and now a national symbol of Belize. Pairing the ruin with the cave gives two sides of Maya life, public ceremony above ground and sacred cave ritual below.
Tubing moves at the river's pace, so it is easy for most swimmers, but your guide will brief you on the cave's rules and any wet-season changes.
