Lake Mascardi and Lake Gutiérrez are separated by a gravel plain that follows the continental divide: Mascardi drains to the Pacific while Gutiérrez drains to the Atlantic. Standing between the two is one of the more unusual geographic facts of the Bariloche area.
Mascardi is reached via Route 40, about 30 km from the city, sits at roughly 750 m above sea level and covers about 39 km². It is named after the missionary friar Nicolás Mascardi, and from above it shows a heart-shaped island, Isla Corazón.
Lake Guillelmo lies very close to Mascardi and is described as the most natural and preserved of the lakes in the area, with a glacial origin. Gutiérrez rounds out the day with the forest hike, an easy, low-difficulty walk.
