Bariloche's official founding date is 3 May 1902, when the government decree was issued. A key figure of those early years was the German immigrant Carlos Wiederhold, who opened the first trading post here, and Swiss, German and Italian settlers shaped the town that followed. The chalet-style architecture you pass on a city drive comes straight from that mix.
Colonia Suiza, on the full-day route, goes back to 1895, when the Goye family, Swiss immigrants who had lived about ten years in Chile, took up land offered by the Argentine government at the foot of Cerro López. Its Wednesday and Sunday fair and the curanto, a meal cooked in a pit with hot stones, are the living remnants of that settlement.
Cerro Catedral's name comes from the granite spires on the mountain that resemble a Gothic cathedral. Seeing its base before finishing on the full Circuito Chico makes this day a useful sampler of the whole Lake District.
