Colonia Suiza was founded in 1895 by the Goye family, Swiss immigrants originally from western Switzerland who had lived about ten years in Chile before taking up land the Argentine government offered to settlers. They built Swiss-style chalets near the southern shore of Lago Perito Moreno, at the foot of Cerro López.
It lies about 25 km from Bariloche. Today the settlement is known for its crafts fair, held on Wednesdays and Sundays, and for curanto cooked in a pit of hot stones.
Riding back roads toward it with a guide leading means you see the scenery at cycling speed without worrying about navigation, with the Andes behind.
