The land around Nahuel Huapi owes its protection partly to Francisco 'Perito' Moreno, the explorer whose work helped secure Argentine sovereignty over this area. As compensation for his services he was granted a large tract here, and in 1903 he donated about 75 km² to the federal government, a gift that led to the national park being created.
