Bariloche's official founding date is 3 May 1902. A key early figure was the German immigrant Carlos Wiederhold, who opened the first trading post, and Swiss, German and Italian settlers shaped the chalet-style architecture the tour looks at.
The postwar chapter is documented. Erich Priebke, a former SS captain involved in the 1944 Ardeatine massacre in Rome, in which 335 men were killed, lived in Bariloche for about 46 years before an ABC television crew traced him in 1994. He was arrested and extradited to Italy, a process completed in November 1995. Locals knew him as a 'good neighbour', which is part of what makes the story difficult.
The guide presents this plainly as history, without sensationalism.
