Bariloche's chocolate tradition is largely postwar. Italian chocolatier Aldo Fenoglio arrived from Turin in 1947 and opened his shop in 1948, becoming known for chocolate en rama, which looks like tree bark. One account says he created it by accident after spilling hot chocolate on the counter, but that is a local legend, not documented history.
Del Turista was founded in 1964 by Benito Secco, born in the Italian Tyrol, and Rapa Nui was founded in 1996 by Diego Fenoglio, though the family's chocolate tradition goes back to Turin in 1947.
Easter week is the peak, when Bariloche's chocolate scene gets busiest; a private tour in other seasons is calmer.
