It's easy to forget, looking at Barceloneta and the Olympic Port today, that Barcelona had almost no public beach at all before 1992. The waterfront was a working industrial district — disused warehouses, rail yards, and a highway that physically cut the city off from its own coastline — until roughly three kilometers of new beach were created by clearing that industrial land as part of the city's Olympic redevelopment.
A Segway suits covering that kind of open, reclaimed waterfront territory well, since the pace and format can flex to whatever a group wants to see, from five minutes to a full three hours, rather than locking into one fixed route the way a scheduled group tour would.
