Montgat isn't a generic "nearby beach" — it's a real, distinct town in its own right, the first stop up the coast from metropolitan Barcelona in the Maresme region. It's also genuinely old: the area is documented as far back as 991 AD, recorded then under the name Monte Chato, with its own castle on record from 1006.
Montgat had a real working identity long before it became a beach stop for boat trips. The town had a strong local tradition of lime kilns, and limestone quarried here is thought to have been used as mortar in the Roman-era walls of Barcelona itself — a genuine, tangible link between this quiet stretch of coast and the ancient city just a few kilometres south.
The town only became its own independent municipality in 1933, having previously been part of neighbouring Tiana, and it changed again with the arrival of the Barcelona–Mataró railway line in 1848 and, later, the Maresme motorway — both of which turned it into the easy day-trip and residential beach town it is today. Stopping here to swim off the boat puts you on a real, local Maresme beach, not one of the more touristed stretches closer to the city centre.
