Barcelona's relationship with the Mediterranean goes back centuries before anyone built a marina here for tourists. Catalan shipbuilders were constructing galleys as early as the 12th century — vessels used both for war and for securing trade routes to ports across the Mediterranean, backed by a network of Catalan consulates abroad — a maritime economy sophisticated enough to help drive Catalonia's broader modernization over the following centuries.
That history is closer than it might look: in 1990, construction crews building Barcelona's Olympic Channel uncovered a genuine 14th-century trading ship, one of only a handful of surviving medieval vessels from Mediterranean trade of that era. It's a real reminder that this coastline has been a working maritime route for the better part of a thousand years, not just since the marinas went in for tourism.
