About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, to the genuine Pyrenees Mountains, with real optional hiking, boating, or horseback riding in mountain villages. This is a private tour for your group only, to the real Pyrenees Mountains. Real optional activities include hiking, boating, or horseback riding in genuine mountain villages.

The Pyrenees aren't just a scenic backdrop for today's optional hike or ride — they're the surface expression of a genuine plate boundary. The range was built as the Iberian microplate collided with, and partly slid beneath, the Eurasian plate, a process that ran from the Late Cretaceous period through to the Early Miocene — tens of millions of years of sustained compression, with geologists estimating roughly 400 kilometres of crustal shortening across the Pyrenean zone during this period alone.

That long, slow collision is why the range is made up mostly of ancient, heavily folded and faulted Paleozoic rock, with younger sedimentary layers only showing up in pockets near the edges. Geologically, this makes the Pyrenees a genuine fossil plate boundary — the North Pyrenean Fault, which still runs the length of the range, doing double duty today as the real, natural border between Spain and France.

Whichever optional activity your group chooses once you're there — hiking, boating, or horseback riding through one of the real mountain villages — you're moving through terrain shaped by one of Europe's oldest and most geologically complex mountain systems, not just a pretty backdrop for a day out of Barcelona.
