The Museu Picasso is a genuinely unusual institution: rather than one purpose-built gallery, it occupies five adjoining medieval and Renaissance palaces strung along Carrer de Montcada — the oldest of them, the Palau Aguilar, dating back to 1386. It opened on March 9, 1963, making it both the first museum anywhere dedicated to Picasso and the only one established during his own lifetime, built around an initial donation of 574 works from his lifelong friend and secretary, Jaume Sabartés.
What makes the collection distinctive is what it isn't: rather than the Cubist and later work most visitors associate with Picasso, the museum's real strength is his formative years in Barcelona, roughly 1895 to 1904, when he arrived as a young teenager with his family and trained at the city's La Llotja art school before frequenting the bohemian tavern Els Quatre Gats, where he held his first solo exhibition. It's a genuinely different side of the artist than the one most people expect walking in.
From the museum, the choice between El Born and the Gothic Quarter is really a choice between two different medieval Barcelonas. El Born's narrow streets around Carrer Montcada grew up as a medieval merchant and artisan quarter serving the nearby port, while the Gothic Quarter carries the city's grander civic and religious architecture, including Barcelona Cathedral itself, under construction through much of the very period that Picasso's own museum now occupies a few streets away.
