About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, through La Rambla, El Born, and the genuine Gothic Quarter. This is a private tour for your group only. Real stops include La Rambla, El Born, and the genuine Gothic Quarter.
El Born carries one of the rawest pieces of Barcelona's history literally underground. After the Bourbon army finally broke through the city's defenses here in September 1714, ending the 13-month siege that closed the War of the Spanish Succession, much of this neighborhood — then known as Vilanova de Mar — was torn down to clear space for a military citadel meant to keep watch over a defeated Barcelona.
That demolished neighborhood stayed buried for nearly 300 years, until renovation work on the old Born market building, starting in 2002, uncovered the foundations of roughly 60 houses across 11 city blocks. The find was significant enough to be declared a national cultural asset in 2006, and the market building reopened in 2013 — on September 11, Catalonia's national day, deliberately timed to the siege's 300th anniversary — as a combined cultural center and open-air archaeological site, with the old streets visible beneath glass floors.
This private walk threads that layered history together with La Rambla and the Gothic Quarter, tracing Barcelona's old town from its medieval core through to a neighborhood that's spent three centuries being destroyed, buried, and rediscovered.
