Long before it was Catalan, Barcelona was Roman. The emperor Augustus founded the colony of Barcino here around 15 BC, giving it the full ceremonial name Colonia Iulia Augusta Faventia Paterna Barcino, on land already inhabited by the Iberian Laietani people. Barcino's defensive walls went up in stages between the 1st century BC and the 4th century AD, and large sections of them survive today, sometimes hiding in plain sight — built directly into the walls of later medieval buildings throughout what's now the Gothic Quarter.
Plaça Sant Jaume, one of this walk's real stops, sits almost exactly where the Roman forum once stood — the city's civic and religious heart for two thousand years running, now home to Barcelona's city hall and the seat of Catalonia's regional government, facing each other across the same square.
From there, the route moves through Ciutat Vella (Catalan for "Old City," Barcelona's historic core) and onto Las Ramblas — itself named for the Arabic word for a seasonal streambed, since the boulevard was once literally a watercourse running just outside the medieval city walls before it was paved over and turned into Barcelona's best-known promenade toward the end of the 18th century.
