There's more than one real way up this mountain, and both have their own genuine history. The original Montserrat Rack Railway, the Cremallera, first opened in 1892, using a toothed rack-and-pinion rail to climb a grade an ordinary train couldn't manage. After a 1953 accident and years of declining use, the line was shut down entirely in 1957 — Montserrat went without a rack railway for over four decades until a rebuilt version reopened on 6 June 2003, carrying nearly 463,000 passengers in just its first year back. The Aeri de Montserrat cable car has a longer unbroken run: engineer Josep Marsans Claramunt was granted the original concession by royal charter in 1928, and the cable car has been operating continuously since 1930.
Riding either one is genuinely part of the experience, not just a way of getting somewhere. The Aeri's cabins swing out over real open air as they climb toward the monastery; the Cremallera's rack-and-pinion gearing lets it manage an incline a conventional train simply can't. Combining both (or choosing between them) on a private, full 8-9 hour day, with no fixed schedule to chase, means you're not stuck picking one mode and hoping it matches your own pace once you reach the basilica, the Black Madonna, and Montserrat's own art museum at the top.
