The monastery at the heart of this day trip has a real founding date: in 1025, the Catalan abbot and bishop Oliba formally established a Benedictine community on the mountain, dedicating it to the dark-skinned carved figure of the Virgin now known across Catalonia as La Moreneta, the Black Madonna. Tradition holds the image was discovered inside a cave on the mountain in the late 9th century, though the surviving Romanesque sculpture itself is generally dated by art historians to the late 12th century — the two stories sit alongside each other rather than cleanly agreeing, which is typical of a site this old.
What isn't in question is how central the monastery became. Between the 13th and 16th centuries, Montserrat grew into one of the most significant pilgrimage destinations on the entire Iberian Peninsula, and the Black Madonna remains the patron icon of Catalonia to this day — still sitting behind the basilica's main altar, still visited and venerated as a living religious site rather than displayed as a historical artifact. The monastery is now approaching its 1,000th anniversary since Oliba's founding, which makes this one of the oldest continuously active religious communities anywhere in the region, reached directly from your own hotel with no transfers in between.
