About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, with a real cable car ride up Montjuïc and a visit to the genuine Montjuïc Castle. This is a private tour for your group only. A real cable car ride ascends Montjuïc, with the genuine Montjuïc Castle at the summit.
Montjuïc Castle began as a fortress built in 1640 and was significantly expanded through the 18th century, eventually garrisoned for thousands of troops and equipped with well over a hundred artillery pieces — a real military stronghold overlooking Barcelona's harbor, not a decorative folly.
Its history afterward is a genuinely difficult one, worth knowing honestly rather than glossing over: from the 19th century onward the castle was repeatedly used as a military prison, most notoriously under Francisco Franco's regime, when it's estimated that more than 170 people were executed there between 1936 and 1938 alone, including Catalonia's former president, Lluís Companys, in 1940. The castle has since opened a dedicated interpretation center addressing this history directly for visitors, rather than treating the site as a simple scenic viewpoint.
The cable car ride up is a real attraction in its own right, climbing the same hill that later hosted Barcelona's 1929 International Exposition and much of the 1992 Olympics — so the panoramic views from the castle's ramparts take in both the harbor the fortress was originally built to defend and the Olympic-era stadium and gardens built far more recently on the same hillside.
