El Call — Barcelona's medieval Jewish quarter, its name likely derived from the Hebrew "qahal," meaning community — was, for roughly five centuries, one of the most significant Jewish communities on the Iberian Peninsula. By the 13th century the quarter is estimated to have held somewhere around 4,000 to 5,000 people, as much as 15% of the entire city's population, and it functioned as a real center of medieval Catalan intellectual life: doctors, translators, financiers, and legal scholars who served the whole city, not just their own community.
That community's history ended abruptly and violently. Over several days in early August 1391, a mob stormed El Call during a wave of anti-Jewish violence that swept across the Iberian Peninsula that year; residents who took shelter in the nearby Castell Nou were forced out, and some 300 people were killed, with most of the rest forced to convert to Christianity or flee the city outright. A century later, the 1492 Alhambra Decree ordered the expulsion of all remaining Jews from Spain, closing the chapter for good.
A real archaeological find in the neighborhood ties directly back to that community: a medieval mikve (Jewish ritual bath) uncovered in 2014 in the courtyard of what's now Barcelona's Jewish History Museum, believed to be among the oldest preserved mikves in Europe. Walking these same real lanes with a Jewish guide gives this history a perspective most general city tours never touch.
