The current Barcelona Cathedral — officially the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia, and known locally as La Seu — was begun on 1 May 1298, built on the foundations of earlier Romanesque and Visigothic churches on the same spot. Construction stretched across roughly 150 years; the cloister, tucked away from the main nave, wasn't finished until 1448, and the cathedral's elaborate Gothic-style main façade wasn't actually added until the 19th century, centuries after the rest of the building.
In that cloister, a small pond is home to thirteen white geese — a tradition tied directly to Saint Eulalia, the city's co-patron saint, who according to legend was a 13-year-old Christian girl martyred by Roman authorities in Barcino (Roman-era Barcelona) around the year 303, subjected to thirteen tortures, one for each year of her life. The geese have been kept there for generations as a living tribute to her age.
The Gothic Quarter's medieval lanes wind out from the cathedral in every direction, and on this private walk your guide threads through them at your own pace — the same streets that have shaped Barcelona's old city since long before Gaudí ever set foot in it.
