Girona's El Call is widely regarded as one of the best-preserved Jewish quarters anywhere in Europe, and its real history goes back further than most visitors expect. Jewish presence in the city is documented from the late 9th century, and by the 12th to 15th centuries the quarter had grown into a genuine center of learning, home to roughly 800 Jews and to the rabbi and Kabbalist scholar Nahmanides. The community itself was ultimately expelled following Spain's 1492 edict, but the physical quarter — its narrow stone lanes and surviving medieval building fabric — remains remarkably intact, with a dedicated Museum of Jewish History that opened in the year 2000.
Those same medieval streets have had an unexpected second act: in Season 6 of Game of Thrones, Girona doubled as both King's Landing and Braavos, with the cathedral's own dramatic steps standing in for the Great Sept of Baelor and the walled old quarter's alleys used for the streets of Braavos, while the nearby monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants played the Citadel of Oldtown. Pairing that real medieval city with Pals' own well-preserved old town and a genuine Costa Brava coastal village gives the day both deep Catalan history and the rugged, pine-backed Mediterranean coastline the region is actually named for.
