Three of this tour's real stops — Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló, and La Pedrera — all sit within Barcelona's Eixample district, the vast 19th-century grid laid out from 1859 under the plan of engineer Ildefons Cerdà. Cerdà's design used near-identical square blocks, each roughly 113 meters per side, deliberately shaved off at the corners at a 45-degree angle — a detail that wasn't decorative but functional, meant to let in more light and air and give horse-drawn carriages, and later cars, room to turn at every intersection.
That grid is part of what makes a tuk-tuk a genuinely sensible way to cover this route: the wide, regular Eixample avenues the plan created are a world apart from the tangled medieval lanes elsewhere in the city, and they let a tour cover real distance — from Modernist landmarks inland out to Barceloneta, the Olympic Port, and Parc de la Ciutadella — at a pace and an open-air vantage point a closed coach bus can't match.
The route itself traces two very different Barcelonas: Gaudí's and his contemporaries' Modernist architecture inland, and the transformed waterfront toward Barceloneta and the Olympic Port, much of which was built on reclaimed industrial land specifically for the 1992 Olympics — meaning a single tuk-tuk ride covers roughly a century of the city's real urban development in one afternoon.
