Barcelona's metropolitan area has operated a formal Low Emission Zone (Zona de Baixes Emissions) since 2020, restricting the most polluting vehicles from entering more than 95 square kilometers of the city on weekdays — a real, binding regulation, not a marketing gesture, that reflects how seriously the city treats air quality in its historic core. Touring by eco (electric) tuk-tuk sidesteps the issue entirely.
It also suits Barcelona's street layout better than a full-size vehicle: much of the old city, including the Gothic Quarter and El Born, is a maze of streets that long predate the automobile, some barely wide enough for two pedestrians to pass, let alone a car.
