Salvador Dalí was born in Figueres in 1904, and decades later he returned to the same town for what became his most personal project. The Dalí Theatre-Museum, inaugurated in 1974, rose on the ruined site of the town's own former Municipal Theatre, itself damaged during the Spanish Civil War. Unlike a conventional museum built afterward to house an artist's work, nearly every element inside — down to the building's own glass geodesic dome and the row of giant egg sculptures along its red facade — was personally conceived by Dalí as part of the artwork itself, not added around it. It now holds one of the most complete collections of his work anywhere in the world and remains the most-visited museum in all of Catalonia.
Figueres also sits inside DO Empordà, a genuinely protected wine region established in 1972 that runs along Catalonia's northern coast near the French border. Reds here lean on Grenache and Carignan grapes, built full-bodied and spiced for the region's warm climate, while the whites — made mainly from Garnacha Blanca, Macabeo, and Parellada — carry the crisp acidity and faint sea-salt minerality that comes from vineyards sitting this close to the Mediterranean. Pairing Dalí's surrealist last work with a real tasting in the same wine region he grew up surrounded by makes for a premium day built around two genuinely connected parts of this same corner of Catalonia.
