Tossa de Mar's Vila Vella is the only fortified medieval town still standing intact anywhere on the Catalan coast, and its documented history stretches back nearly a thousand years. The site enters recorded history in 966, when a Count of Barcelona granted the land to the nearby abbey of Ripoll, with the community beginning to raise its own defensive walls in the centuries that followed. The complete stone perimeter visible today — battlemented walls, three cylindrical towers, and four turrets — dates in its present form to the end of the 14th century, built first against pirate raids and, after 1492, against Barbary corsairs.

By the 1930s, that same walled town had become something else entirely: a genuine refuge for European avant-garde artists, drawn by the quality of light along this stretch of coast. Marc Chagall was among them, and he was taken enough with the place to nickname it "Blue Paradise," a name that has stuck in local tourism ever since. His painting "Celestial Violinist," made during his time there, now hangs in the town's own municipal museum, set inside the Vila Vella walls alongside other work from that same era — a real, if less expected, reason this small fishing town ended up on an artist's map at all.
