Empúries is genuinely one of the oldest settlements on this entire coastline, and its ruins are unusual for a specific archaeological reason. Greek colonists, arriving from Phocaea by way of Massalia (modern Marseille), founded the site as Emporion — Greek for "market" — around 575 BC, making it one of the earliest Greek colonies anywhere on the Iberian Peninsula. Roman troops later used the same port as their entry point into the peninsula in 218 BC, during the war against Carthage, eventually building their own separate city, Emporiae, alongside the existing Greek settlement rather than simply replacing it.
That's what makes Empúries genuinely distinctive: it's the only site on the Iberian Peninsula where real Greek-city and Roman-city remains survive side by side, each with its own layout and its own centuries of continuous use stretching from roughly the 6th century BC to the 2nd century AD. Covering those two layered ancient worlds on foot, then switching entirely to the coastline itself with a real glass-bottom boat ride out toward the Medes Islands, pairs genuine archaeology with the Costa Brava's equally genuine underwater scenery in a single private day.
