The Gothic cathedral standing today was begun on 1 May 1298, with its main structure substantially complete by 1420 and its cloister — home to the cathedral's well-known geese — finished by 1448. For nearly four centuries after that, the building's main facade stayed plain and unfinished; the elaborate neo-Gothic front visitors photograph today was only added between roughly 1887 and 1913, funded by a wealthy Catalan industrialist, Manuel Girona i Agrafel, to mark Barcelona's 1888 World's Fair.
Inside the cloister, 13 live white geese have been kept in a small pond for centuries — documented there since at least the 16th century — representing, by long tradition, the age at which Saint Eulàlia, a young Christian girl martyred under Roman rule, was put to death for refusing to renounce her faith.
Skip-the-line entry matters more here than it sounds: the cathedral sits at the heart of the Gothic Quarter's most tightly packed, heavily visited streets, within sight of the surviving Roman city wall and a short walk from Plaça del Rei. Adding the optional stop at the Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar extends the same architectural story a few streets over — it was built in a remarkable 54 years (1329–1383), fast enough that its design reads as unusually unified for a Gothic building, largely because it was funded and physically constructed by the bastaixos, the city's own dockworkers, who carried the stone for it on their backs from Montjuïc.
