Camp Nou opened on 24 September 1957, replacing FC Barcelona's previous ground, Les Corts, which at only 48,000 seats could no longer hold the crowds drawn by stars like the Hungarian forward László Kubala. Built mostly of concrete and iron between 1955 and 1957, it became, and for decades remained, one of the largest football stadiums in Europe by capacity.
The stadium visitors see today is also a genuine construction site in its own right: since 2023, Camp Nou has been undergoing the "Espai Barça" renovation, one of the most ambitious stadium redevelopment projects in world football, aiming to eventually expand capacity toward around 105,000 seats. FC Barcelona returned to play competitive matches there starting in November 2025 even as work continued around them in phases, with the full project — including the stadium's third tier and roof — not expected to be finished until around 2027. A visit right now is a chance to see one of football's most storied grounds genuinely being rebuilt in real time, not a finished museum piece.
Because the renovation is ongoing in stages, exactly which areas — press room, presidential box, pitch-level access — are open to visitors on any given day can shift as construction phases complete, which is part of what makes a private, flexible tour with hotel pickup a genuinely practical way to see it, rather than trying to time a visit around a public schedule that's still actively changing.
