This route's two endpoints — Port Olímpic and Mar Bella beach — share more history than they might look like they do. Both exist in their current form because of the same event: the wholesale redevelopment of Barcelona's waterfront ahead of the 1992 Olympic Games.
Before that redevelopment, the area now occupied by Port Olímpic was a rundown stretch of empty warehouses, railyards, and factories, part of why Barcelona had a long-standing reputation as a city that turned its back on the sea. The Olympic-era project tore that down and rebuilt it as a working yacht marina and waterfront entertainment district — the starting point for this trip.
Mar Bella beach, further up the coast, has a similar real backstory: public baths once stood here in the early 20th century until storms destroyed them in the 1940s, after which the whole stretch of coastline fell into decline. It was only recovered as a genuine public beach during that same 1992 Olympic-era renovation. Four hours on the water is enough time to properly connect these two very different post-Olympic waterfront spaces — the built-up marina energy of Port Olímpic and the quieter, more local beach character of Mar Bella — rather than just circling a single bay.
