The black sand that defines Piha and the rest of Auckland's west coast gets its colour from titanomagnetite, an iron-and-titanium-rich mineral eroded out of volcanic rock and carried down this exposed, Tasman-facing coastline over thousands of years. It's genuinely magnetic — a real, physical difference from the paler silica sand found on Auckland's eastern, harbour-facing beaches, not just a visual one.
That same ironsand runs along much of the North Island's west coast, and further south it's still being actively mined, at Waikato North Head and Taharoa, to feed New Zealand Steel's Glenbrook mill near Waiuku. Glenbrook was commissioned in 1970 specifically because this fine-grained, titanium-heavy sand had defeated conventional blast-furnace technology ever since mining attempts first began in 1849 — it took direct-reduction kiln and electric-arc furnace technology, developed after the Second World War, to finally turn it into usable steel, and Glenbrook remains New Zealand's only integrated steelworks today.
Karekare Falls, the route's other real stop, is a 30-metre waterfall inside Waitākere Ranges Regional Park, reached by a short track off Karekare Road. It's a genuinely different piece of screen history from Piha's own: rather than The Piano, the falls were used as a filming location for the television series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess.
