The larvae of Arachnocampa luminosa, a fungus gnat found only in New Zealand, produce a blue-green light to lure small insects into sticky silk threads — using a light-producing enzyme loosely similar to a firefly's, paired with a different light-producing chemical unique to the species.

About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, genuinely self-paced, at the real Waitomo Glowworm Caves. This is a private, self-paced tour for your group only, at the genuine Waitomo Glowworm Caves — avoiding the pace of the standard large tour groups.
The Waitomo Glowworm Caves were discovered in 1887 by local Māori chief Tane Tinorau and English surveyor Fred Mace, who explored the underground stream together on a raft of bundled flax stems, lit only by candles. Māori had known of the cave for generations — Tinorau himself used the area as a good spot for eeling — but there's no record anyone had gone inside before that trip. What they found above them was a ceiling scattered with thousands of glowing native insects. Tinorau later found a separate land entrance, the same one visitors use today, and he and his wife began guiding tourists through it from 1889.
This tour deliberately moves away from the pace that discovery eventually created — the large, scheduled tour groups the caves now draw. Here the visit is private and self-paced, a boat trip through the main glowworm grotto on your own group's timing rather than slotted into someone else's schedule.
What's glowing overhead is Arachnocampa luminosa, a fungus-gnat larva found only in New Zealand. Each one hangs dozens of sticky, beaded silk threads below a mucus-lined perch and produces a steady blue-green light to draw small flying insects into the trap — a hunting method unrelated to how fireflies work, even though the enzyme behind the glow is distantly similar.
