About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, with a genuine Whakanewha Nikau Trail walk and a real hands-on ceramics/pottery workshop. This is a private tour for your group only. Real stops include the Whakanewha Nikau Trail, olive oil tasting, vineyard lunch and wine tasting, and a genuine hands-on ceramics/pottery workshop.

Whakanewha Regional Park, on Waiheke's south coast, holds genuine evidence of long Māori settlement — real pā sites and shell middens are still visible along the headland. European settlers used the land for boatbuilding and forestry from the 1830s before it was eventually set aside as a regional park in 1994 and formally opened to the public in 2007.

The Nikau Track running through it is an easy loop through regenerating native bush and groves of nikau palm, threading past taraire, kohekohe and old kanuka trees before the path continues on to a series of small cascading waterfalls — a genuinely quiet corner of an island mostly known for its vineyards.

Waiheke's ceramics scene is just as real as its wine region. The Waiheke Community Art Gallery, established in Oneroa in 1995, shows work from more than 100 local and New Zealand artists each year, ceramicists included — the kind of working arts community this tour's hands-on pottery session draws on directly, alongside a genuine vineyard lunch and olive oil tasting.
