Ayrlies Garden, near Whitford southeast of Auckland, was created by Beverley McConnell and her late husband Malcolm, co-founder of the New Zealand engineering and construction firm McConnell Dowell, and named after the family's farm in Scotland. It began in 1964 as 1.2 hectares of bare, heavy coastal clay, expanded to 4.8 hectares in 1980 with the addition of three large ponds, and grew again around the turn of the millennium when 14 hectares of swamp flats below the homestead were transformed into wetland with a 3.3-hectare lake — more than six decades of continuous, hands-on development by one family.
Highwic, in central Auckland, was built in 1862 for Alfred Buckland, a wealthy colonial landowner, and is listed by Heritage New Zealand as a Category I historic place. It's regarded as one of the country's finest examples of Carpenter Gothic architecture, its steep gables and timber detailing a genuine 19th-century survival inside a now heavily built-up city.
Cornwall Park has its own real origin story: Sir John Logan Campbell, an Auckland resident since 1840, gifted its 230 acres to the people of Auckland on 10 June 1901, during a civic reception for the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York — asking the Duke's permission to name the park in his honour. At its centre stands Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill), a volcanic cone and the site of a pre-European pā, where Campbell himself is buried at the summit beside the obelisk.
The Winter Gardens at Auckland Domain opened in 1913, their glasshouses designed in the Edwardian style associated with the English partnership of architect Edwin Lutyens and garden designer Gertrude Jekyll — a formal, historic counterpoint to the younger Auckland Botanic Gardens, created more recently from open farmland on the city's southern edge.
