The building now known as Hunting Lodge Winery started life in 1868 as the country lodge of the Kerr-Taylor family, before being renovated into a restaurant in the 1970s. The site holds a genuine piece of New Zealand wine history: it's recognised as home to the country's original commercial Sauvignon Blanc vines, planted by the Spence brothers — founders of Matua — who made New Zealand's first Sauvignon Blanc here.
That history sits inside a much larger story. West Auckland was the centre of New Zealand's wine industry for the first decades of the 20th century, built almost entirely by small, family-owned vineyards founded by Dalmatian (Croatian) immigrants — among them Josip Babich, who planted his first vines in 1912 as a teenager, laying groundwork for what's now one of the country's best-known wine names.
Parakai's hot pools, near Helensville, have an even older local history. Known to Māori and early European settlers simply as the Helensville Hot Springs, the natural waters were in informal use long before a government grant funded a proper swimming and bathing facility there around 1910 — making it one of the longest-running hot-pool destinations in the Auckland region.
The day ends at Muriwai, where the west coast's dramatic black-sand coastline — coloured by iron-rich sand eroded from ancient volcanic rock — makes for a genuinely striking backdrop as the sun goes down over the Tasman Sea.
