Muriwai's black-sand beach stretches roughly 50 kilometres north to the mouth of the Kaipara Harbour, its dark colour coming from iron-rich sand eroded from ancient volcanic rock — including the offshore Kaipara Volcano, which erupted between 23 and 16 million years ago, and the pillow-lava cliffs that remain from the old Waitākere Volcano further south. It's also home to one of New Zealand's few mainland-accessible Australasian gannet breeding colonies, a genuinely rare wildlife sight this close to a major city.
A short drive inland tells a very different story: West Auckland was the centre of New Zealand's wine industry for the first decades of the 20th century, built up by small, family-run vineyards founded largely by Dalmatian (Croatian) immigrant winemakers who recreated the wines they knew from home.
Pairing the two in a single day is a genuinely distinct combination — dramatic volcanic coastline and a working seabird colony in the morning, followed by a sit-down wine tasting at a nearby estate in the afternoon, without the long transfers that would normally separate them.
