About This Tour

A private, NZ Transport Agency-licensed tour for your group only, to the genuine Muriwai gannet colony. This is a private, licensed tour for your group only, to Muriwai's real gannet colony — one of the world's few mainland-accessible gannet breeding sites.

Muriwai is home to one of New Zealand's few mainland-accessible Australasian gannet (tākapu) breeding colonies, and is considered the easiest of them to reach and view up close. More than a thousand breeding pairs return to nest here every year, making it one of the more significant seabird colonies on New Zealand's North Island.

The colony's breeding season runs roughly from July or August through to March, with the first chicks typically hatching around October and activity peaking between November and February. Birds nest on the bare rocks of Otakamiro Point, viewable from two purpose-built platforms, while a further portion of the colony breeds on two small islands just offshore.

Australasian gannets are striking birds up close — golden-crowned, with azure eye-rings, and famous for the high-speed plunge dives they use to catch fish, folding their wings back and hitting the water like a thrown spear. Seeing that behaviour firsthand, from a platform just metres from a working breeding colony, is a genuinely rare wildlife encounter this close to a major city.
