Tāwharanui Regional Park, east of Warkworth, is a genuine New Zealand conservation success story. The Tāwharanui Open Sanctuary Society (TOSSI) formed in 2002 to push for a predator-free reserve here, and by 2004 a roughly 2.5-kilometre predator-proof fence — capped to stop climbers, buried in mesh to stop diggers, and curved into a spiral that channels any predator reaching it into traps — sealed off the peninsula. It became New Zealand's first "open sanctuary," a model that lets public recreation, working farmland, and genuine conservation share the same unfenced ground inside one perimeter, with North Island brown kiwi, whiteheads, and robins among the native species reintroduced since.
Because this itinerary is genuinely built around your own interests, the rest of the day draws from a real, flexible set of stops rather than a fixed script — the wild Mangawhai coastal trail, Matakana Village's chocolatier, galleries, and boutique vineyards, a stop at Sawmill Brewery, and Cape Rodney–Ōkakari Point, better known locally as the Leigh Marine Reserve. Created in 1975 after years of lobbying by local scientists and divers, it was New Zealand's first marine reserve, and its waters are still studied today by the University of Auckland's neighbouring Leigh Marine Laboratory.
That same flexibility means any artist studios, galleries, or craft stops on your day can be chosen from Matakana village's own real, growing cluster of working artists — built organically out of the village's farmers'-market-driven reinvention rather than any single fixed itinerary.
