Matakana was founded by European settlers in the 1840s, drawn by the district's timber reserves, fertile clay soils, and a mild climate well suited to growing fruit — for well over a century it was a working farming and timber town, not a wine destination. Wine arrived comparatively late: Peter and Norma Unkovich planted the district's first vines nearby at Bay View Vineyard in the mid-1950s and gained a winemaking licence in 1961, with Antipodean (1979) and Heron's Flight (1988) following before a cluster of boutique wineries — Ransom, Brick Bay, Ascension, Hyperion, and Matakana Estate among them — opened through the early 1990s.
The village itself changed shape even more recently. The weekly Matakana Village Farmers' Market became an incubator for small local businesses, and within roughly fifteen years a sleepy rural settlement built around a country pub grew into a genuine cluster of galleries, cafés, boutiques, and wine bars. Matakana wine remains a deliberately small-scale affair — most vineyards here are still family-owned, many wines are made in hand-picked, limited quantities rarely sold outside the region, and it's common to meet the actual winegrower when you visit a cellar door, with Pinot Gris, Merlot, Syrah, and a scattering of less common varietals the district's real specialties.
This private day brings you into that genuine small-wine-region texture directly — a lake-view lunch at the Glass House, real boutique tastings at family-run cellar doors, and the chocolate and gelato stops that round out Matakana village's own, more recent reinvention as one of the Auckland region's most distinctive food-and-wine day trips.
