Kumeu's wine industry was founded largely by Dalmatian (Croatian) immigrant families in the early 20th century, including Josip Babich, who planted his first vines in 1912, and the Brajkovich family, who founded Kumeu River in 1944. West Auckland was the centre of New Zealand's wine industry for decades before regions like Marlborough and Hawke's Bay grew to prominence.

About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, in a real Mercedes-Benz V-Class, through Kumeu's genuine wine country. This is a private tour for your group only, explicitly confirmed: "it's just you, your group and your local guide." Real stops span Kumeu's genuine wine region.
Kumeu is often called the historical heartland of New Zealand's wine industry. Dalmatian (Croatian) immigrants arriving in the late 19th and early 20th centuries began planting vines here to recreate the wines of home, with Josip Babich — founder of what's now one of the country's best-known wine names — planting his first vines in 1912 as a teenager.
Kumeu River, one of the region's most internationally recognised wineries, was founded in 1944 by Mick and Katé Brajkovich and their son Maté. It became one of a handful of family-owned Kumeu wineries whose work over subsequent decades helped establish the district's reputation on the world stage, known today particularly for its Chardonnay.
For much of the first half of the 20th century, West Auckland was the actual centre of New Zealand's wine production — a landscape of small, family-owned vineyards of largely Dalmatian origin, long before the country's wine industry grew to include Marlborough, Hawke's Bay, and Central Otago. Kumeu's wine trail today traces directly back to that early, immigrant-built foundation.
