About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, to the genuine Hobbiton Movie Set, the real film location from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. This is a private tour for your group only, to the real Hobbiton Movie Set — genuinely still standing on a working Matamata sheep farm, used in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films.
Peter Jackson found this location from the air. Scouting sites for The Lord of the Rings by helicopter in 1998, he spotted a large tree on rolling farmland near Matamata that matched the Party Tree described in Tolkien's books — standing beside a lake, with no modern development visible from the ground. That farm belonged, and still belongs, to the Alexander family.
The Alexanders moved onto the roughly 500-hectare property in 1978 and have run it as a working livestock farm ever since, today carrying around 13,000 sheep and 300 Angus cattle alongside the film set. Filming for the original trilogy began in 1999, when the production built 37 hobbit holes into the hillside — temporary facades of untreated timber, plywood and polystyrene that were largely dismantled once filming wrapped.
What visitors walk through today is a later, more permanent version of that set, built when the Alexanders welcomed the production back a decade on for The Hobbit trilogy — but the farm underneath it has never stopped being exactly what it was before Jackson's helicopter ever flew over it.
