About This Tour

The Green Dragon Inn is a genuinely functioning building, not a facade. It was built during Hobbiton's permanent 2011-to-2012 reconstruction for The Hobbit trilogy, took roughly five months to complete, and officially opened to the public in late 2012 with New Zealand's then-Prime Minister John Key on hand for the opening. It was designed from the start to work as a real café, bar and function venue for visitors, which is exactly what it still does.
The mill and waterwheel beside the stone bridge have the same split history. During filming, they were built from the same temporary materials as the rest of the original set — scaffolding, plywood, polystyrene — before being rebuilt properly in permanent materials during the 2011-2012 reconstruction. The waterwheel genuinely turns today.
Timing the visit for sunset means the group sees the Shire's gardens and hobbit holes in the day's last light before sitting down for the Hobbit-inspired banquet inside the Inn itself, then walking the set again by lantern light once it's properly dark — a different look at the same real place.
