Black Abyss is run by the Legendary Black Water Rafting Co. inside Ruakuri Cave, part of the wider Waitomo cave system and a genuinely separate cave from the classic Waitomo Glowworm Cave tour. It's the company's most demanding trip, and it starts the way the name suggests — a roughly 35-metre abseil straight down into the cave.
From there the real sequence runs: a short zipline through glowworm-lit tunnels, cave tubing on inflated inner tubes along the underground stream, climbing past small underground waterfalls, and a final squeeze and climb back out. The whole trip runs close to five hours, with wetsuits, helmets, tubes and abseiling gear all supplied, finishing with a hot shower and snacks.
Even at this pace, the cave is home to the same native glowworm found throughout Waitomo — Arachnocampa luminosa, a fungus-gnat larva found only in New Zealand, which hangs beaded, sticky silk threads from its perch and glows blue-green to lure small flying insects into them. It's visible from the zipline and tubing sections, a quieter detail inside an otherwise adrenaline-heavy day.
