Piha's name traces directly back to Lion Rock, the dramatic outcrop sitting in the middle of the beach. Its original Māori name, used by Te Kawerau ā Maki, was Te Piha, meaning roughly "the divided ripple at the bow of the canoe" — a description of how waves break and split around it. Lion Rock itself was once a fortified pā, and terracing and midden deposits are still visible on it despite centuries of coastal erosion.
The beach's modern identity is just as tied to the Piha Surf Life Saving Club, founded in January 1934 by Frank Ross, Cliff Holt, Bert Holt, Stan Holt, and Laurie Wilson, making it the oldest surf club on Auckland's west coast. Its patrols became genuinely nationally known after being featured in the long-running TVNZ series Piha Rescue, which turned both the club and Piha's notoriously powerful rips into something most New Zealanders already recognise before they ever visit.
Karekare, the second real stop on this route, has its own claim to fame: it's where Jane Campion filmed the beach scenes for her Oscar-winning 1993 film The Piano, shot over May and June 1992 with local surf lifesavers drafted in to help haul the 150-kilogram prop piano across the dunes between tides. Karekare Falls itself, a 30-metre waterfall reached by a short walking track within Waitākere Ranges Regional Park, is a separate and equally real stop just a short walk from the beach.
