Atlanta's most photographed ribbon of street art is hidden under a railroad. The Krog Street Tunnel was built in 1912 by a freight-rail company serving the Atlanta Stove Works in Inman Park and the Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill in Cabbagetown, and it has been the only direct link between those two neighborhoods for over a century. Graffiti began creeping onto its walls in the 1960s and flourished from the 1990s, and the work is repainted constantly, so the tunnel never looks the same twice.
The BeltLine began as a graduate thesis. In 1999 Georgia Tech student Ryan Gravel proposed turning a roughly 22-mile ring of abandoned and underused rail corridor into transit, trails and development; the idea sat for a few years before a grassroots movement grew around it. Today the trail connects many of the in-town neighborhoods this tour moves through.
Centennial Olympic Park carries a heavier story: a pipe bomb exploded there on July 27, 1996, during the Summer Olympics, killing one person and injuring more than 100. Security guard Richard Jewell found the bag and helped clear the area, though he was wrongly treated as a suspect for weeks afterward. The park today is a place of remembrance as much as a public green.
