Helen began as a timber town: the Byrd-Matthews company opened a major sawmill around 1910 and the town was incorporated in 1913. After the timber industry faded, local business owners in 1968 asked Clarkesville artist John Kollock for ideas; he had served in Bavaria and suggested an Alpine look. Work began in January 1969, and by 1972 his watercolors had become real buildings.
Helen is now among Georgia's top visitor destinations, behind only Atlanta and Savannah by most accounts. Pair its Alpine-style shops with the wineries of the nearby Georgia mountains, where Serenity Cellars in Cleveland is among the stops.
