Margaret Mitchell and her husband lived in Apartment No. 1 of the Crescent Apartments from 1925 to 1932; she called it "The Dump." The building was constructed in 1899 and divided into ten apartments in 1913. She wrote much of the novel there, reportedly between about 1926 and 1930, at a typewriter on a small table in the living-room alcove, and the museum there holds her typewriter and manuscripts.
The Georgian Terrace Hotel at 659 Peachtree Street opened in 1911, designed by New York architect W. L. Stoddart. When the film debuted in Atlanta in December 1939, most of the stars stayed there and its Grand Ballroom hosted the premiere gala, but the screening itself was held at Loew's Grand Theatre. Mitchell is buried at Oakland Cemetery, where her monument is one of the most visited.
