Ebenezer Baptist Church was founded in 1886 by Rev. John A. Parker and 13 supporters on Airline Street, and moved to its Auburn Avenue home in 1914 under Rev. Adam Daniel Williams, Martin Luther King Jr.'s grandfather. Martin Luther King Sr. then led it for over 40 years and co-pastored with his son until 1968.
Atlanta's Black higher-education legacy is also central to the city's story: Atlanta University was founded in 1865, Clark College in 1869, and the two merged into Clark Atlanta University in 1988. The Atlanta University Center consortium, formed in 1929 among Morehouse, Spelman and Atlanta University, is described as the world's oldest and largest consortium of historically Black colleges and universities.
