The Varvakios Central Market (also spelled Varvakeios) is Athens' oldest and largest indoor food market, and it has a real, documented construction history. The Municipality of Athens began building it on Athinas Street in 1878, and a fire that destroyed the older open-air market near the Roman Agora in August 1884 pushed the city to finish the new covered building, which opened in 1886. It's named for Ioannis Varvakis, an 18th-century Greek sea captain and benefactor whose donations funded several Athens institutions. Nearly a century and a half later, it's still a working market rather than a restored tourist attraction — fishmongers, butchers, and spice stalls operate there daily.
Street food is the other half of this tour, and Athens has its own specific repertoire rather than a generic label. Souvlaki (grilled skewered meat, usually wrapped in pita with tomato, onion, and tzatziki), gyro, and koulouri (a ring of bread coated in sesame seeds, sold from carts across the city and eaten as a morning snack) are all genuinely Athenian staples rather than tourist-era inventions.
Walking the market itself is a sensory experience distinct from a sit-down meal — vendors calling out prices, the smell of fresh fish and herbs, stalls selling everything from whole lambs to barrels of olives — which is part of why this runs as a walking tour through a working market rather than a seated tasting menu.
